Biographical Information
Thomas was born in 1225 at Roccasecca, a hilltop castle just about midway between Naples and Rome. He was entered at Montecassino at the age of five, but later transferred to the University of Naples after the monastery became a battle ground. He spent six years studying in Naples and became greatly influenced by the Dominicans. In 1245 he accompanied Albertus to the University of Paris. During his three years in Paris, Aquinas threw himself in the midst of a controversy between the University and the Friar Preachers about the liberty of teaching. The Dominicans and the Franciscans represented a revolutionary challenge to the well-established clerical systems of early medieval Europe. Aquinas was chosen to defend his order and did so with great success--overcoming the arguments of the champion of the University. He graduated with a degree in Theology in 1248 and began his literary activity and public life. Aquinas has been described as a comprehensive scholar who utilized the Aristotelian method.
